Daily News:
The Lake E science team remains in Pevek  -- being lazy, sleeping late, and going for walks around town.   The weather was great today -- warm and sunny -- and many of us visited the museum.  We gave them a CD with photos of the Lake E project and hope we can provide them with more material for a display for the locals to enjoy.  The town of Pevek is a pretty depressing place if you only look at the physical surroundings and lack of public works.  There is trash everywhere, buildings are falling apart.   But the museum is clean and well maintained with a growing collection of archeology and human history of the region.
We made one final visit to the core containers in Gutov's Yard -- one reefer has the sediment cores and is kept at 4 deg C and the other is an unheated container with the rock cores and other equipment to come with the charter in June.   All of our samples have been weighed and total 3.5 tons!
Tonight most of the group is over at the "Iceberg" social building for some pool and beer.  Pavel and I, being the old folks in this group, are working on spreadsheets of various kinds.
We have three more full days here as we await our flight back to Moscow on Tuesday, May 19.
cheers .... Julie BG et al.

Daily News:
The science crew is in Pevek waiting to depart next week, but our adventures continue.  Today most of us experienced a Pevek uchak for the first time.  The wind was howling from the south to the point that most of us had trouble walking or standing up just going to the store.  It was comical really.
A uchak is a local name for these winds set up, much like katabatic winds, by the violent flow of cold air from the continent out over Pevek, where it seems to warmer.  Evidence of earlier uchak events can be seen where siding had been ripped up and thrown to the ground off a building.  Today we saw windows break in one of the abandoned buildings here because of the wind.  Some events at the local museum were even cancelled today because of the wind threat.
A few of the men in the science crew out-did themselves preparing a fabulous pork and potatoes dinner for all of us on the small stove here in the Hydromet Station.  Now we’re off to the “Iceberg” social club for some pool.
To save you from the agony of our waiting around for Tuesday, tomorrow will be the last daily report and we will submit the final Weekly report no. 18.
Poka from us all, during a Saturday night in Pevek...Julie BG

Last Daily News:
Many of you are probably relieved that this is the last news of the day.   There isn't much to report other than people are sleeping and reading and working on computers.   A bunch of the guys visited the Pevek Banya and Dr. Vladimir (our medical doc from St. Pete) made us a fine noodle soup!
On Tuesday we fly to Moscow where we all start to split up.   We look forward to seeing Marianna again during our one night at the Salyut Hotel.  Then its flights to the USA and Germany on May 20.

From the Moscow Airports:

Domodedova -- Julie, Addie, Brady, Chico, and Jared - to Chicago on American Airlines and Moira to Frankfurt on Swiss Air.

Sheremet'evo -- Joey on Delta to Atlanta

Vnukovo -- Volker and Carsten on German Wings to Cologne

Dr. Ivanov will take the night train to St. Pete; Vladi and Pavel have separate plans in Moscow; Grisha hopes to get out of Pevek a few days after us via Anadyr.

By Tuesday morning, May 19 in Pevek  (Monday afternoon in the US), this email address will no longer work.  The Salyut Hotel will have wifi.

All the best.....Julie BG
